CHARACTER DESIGN: LOU RENÇO

This was created for a Concept Art workshop held at my college. We were tasked with creating a character from scratch and developing their design. We were expected to, by the end of the 5 classes long course, have a full body turn around for our characters.

Our first assignment was making a moodboard for our character. Seeing as I wanted to experiment with something out of my comfort zone, I choose to create a hybrid character, human and insect. As for his clothing, I believed it would be interesting if he was a postman.
After my concept was approved, I started sketching the character, at first exploring some gesture work and experimenting with a four-arms anatomy. Satisfied with the direction I was taking, I started on some color tests, landing on a friendly, cartoony design.
In this check-up, my professor asked me to alter the character's style, giving him more realistic proportions and details. I was also asked to give more detail and thought to the wings.
After all of these concepts were approved by the professor, I got to work on the character's key pose and model sheet. I wanted his key pose to accentuate the shy behaviour of the character, while also clearly displaying all of his insect characteristics.
At last, aided by the poses featured in the model sheet, I developed the animated turn around for the character, marking the end of this activity. This animation took me 4 hours of work.
